Advice for teenage son...

I have a sixteen year old who has received marching orders from his doctor to get some exercise. His first choice is to run, but the weather has been awful and it’s pitch dark around here by 6pm. Don’t really want my kiddo off running in the cold dark. So, I have been trying to turn him towards FB but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on workouts for an inexperienced teenager? He’s not in awful shape and weight is not at all an issue, he just isn’t playing organized sports anymore and we need something to fill in the gap. Thanks!
