Trainer Talk [Episode 13]: What Are You Getting Stronger For?

Hey Team!

What are you getting stronger for?

[Episode 13]: — Strength Training for Everyday Life: What are you getting stronger for?

It’s a question worth asking, especially when it’s easy to get caught up in how much weight you’re lifting or whether you used heavier dumbbells than last time. Those numbers can help you track progress, but they don’t tell you everything about what your training is doing for you.

You may want to keep up with your kids, feel stronger in a sport you enjoy, or carry things around the house more easily. Maybe you want to keep doing something for years to come. Those are all good reasons to show up for a strength workout, and they can add a little more meaning to the work.

In our latest episode of Trainer Talk, we start with what counts as strength training and get into some questions you might recognize from your own workouts. How heavy should your weights feel? Do you always need to lift more to make progress? And what do you do when the dumbbells you normally reach for feel heavier than expected?

One thing we hope you take into your next workout: you have room to adjust. Neither of us expects every workout to go exactly as planned.

We also talk about how our training experiences influence our coaching and how we brought our approaches together for the 10-day Muscle & Power challenge. There are a few lighter moments, too, including an overly ambitious idea of progressive overload.

Give the episode a listen. We’d love to hear what connects with you and what gives your own training a purpose beyond finishing the workout.
