Gym Equipment

Thoughts/opinions on equipment at the gym, is there an advantage to much heavier weight, that can only be used essentially in unnatural positions? Or is it just better to lift heavy as you can with good form and natural ranges of motions and balancing utilizing free weights - I.E leg press vs squats/lunges etc- those ab/adductor machines etc? In reference to size gains on legs/glutes. Thanks in advance!
