Weights at Shoulder or Side ?


Hi everyone! Long time runner, very new to FB here. :)

I have only ever done squats/lunges with the weights held down at my sides. In the videos, I've noticed that they hold their weights up on their shoulders. I can squat/ lunge a lot more weight at my sides than when I hold the weight up at my shoulder. Which is better - more weight at my sides or less weight held up at my shoulders? Thank you!
