Weights question

So does it matter if I use a barbell with weights or dumbells for squats, side lunges, deadlifts etc? My legs are stronger than my arms and when I use dumbbells I feel super awkward like I don't know where to hold them. I feel like my arms are constantly flexed when I hold at my shoulders and it makes it hard to focus on my lower body's form. And when I let them hang I either feel like my hips are in the way or my shoulders start to hurt. When I use a barbell with weights I feel like I can focus more on my form and lift heavier so I just want to be sure there isn't a reason for me to use dumbbells instead?
