For squats I use lighter weights when I lift them above the shoulders. When I keep them down by my side I can use more weight.
I assume that with weights above the shoulders your core and arm/shoulder muscles need to work harder. Plus it's more a challenge to keep the balance.
Sometimes I want my leg muscles to work harder, and to give the upper and core muscles a break. Then I keep the weights low by my side or in front.
Does that make sense?
Weights up (above shoulder) or down (by side) for squats?
