Having trouble with squats and deadlifts

I finished the free 5 day challenge today, but throughout the workout, whenever I was doing squats or deadlifts (I’m a beginner at weightlifting), I felt lots tension in my back, but nowhere in my legs. Maybe I’m lifting too heavy or my form is not right, but I’m not sure what to do. I do not have very much muscle in my back or in my legs yet.
