Lower back (hip flexor?) twinges

Hey! I'm hoping for some tips to help me with a problem I've identified.

You know how your lower back can twinge and hurt when you do crunches the wrong way (not engaging abs properly)? Well, I've managed to fix that problem and can now (finally! woo hoo!) feel my abs engaged and working when I'm doing crunch-type activities.

However.... I am having a lot of difficulty experiencing that same pain when doing some of the pilates activities that involve the same muscle group but in other positions, such as toe taps and leg lifts. I've tried to figure out the imprint, which I think is supposed to help keep you in the right posture, but as soon as I drop my legs, my back raises again.

Are there any tips or suggestions for how to build that lower back strength without the twinges and possibly hurting myself? Or is this just a case of (like my experience with crunches) keeping on working on it little by little?

Thanks in advance! I appreciate the FB community!
