Replacing Lunges

I have started to incorporate lower body strength training into my routine but have a little bit of a difficulty. My big toe on my left foot does not flex due to an old injury. So I cannot effectively do balanced lunges on both sides with weights and it seems almost every workout incorporates this in the routine. I don't want to do one side badly and have my form suffer! Any ideas as to what to replace the lunge with that will be just as efffective?
