Calories?

I have been struggling with my weight recently and read online that eating 1500 calories a day is the best way to lose weight along with exercise. However, I have found that this is making me way more obsessed with my weight loss and I am struggling at doing this. I have found myself constantly reading how many calories are in foods and missing out when my family are eating things that will make me go over that 1500 calorie limit. So, does having fewer calories matter or should I just eat the food that I want without feeling completely guilty and ashamed of myself afterwards?
