No pain, no gain

I can’t remember if I’ve asked this before, but I’m wondering if it’s true that you have to feel sore after a workout as an indication that you worked hard enough? There are days that I am sore, (the day after), but a lot of times I’m not. I’m lifting as heavy as I can, to keep good form, and I feel like I’m pushing myself when doing any HIIT/cardio. We don’t have a scale so I’m not sure if my weight is changing, but my body seems to be maintaining so I guess that’s good. I would like to be able to see a little more definition in certain areas so I’m not sure if that old saying is true, no pain no gain. If it is then maybe I’ve been doing things wrong...😕

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, thoughts, input!
