Last night was spicy Thai night in our household - Spicy Thai Basil Chicken (Pad somethingorother); and Spicy Mango Salad.
At a restaurant in Thailand - you know a dish is gonna be spicy when your server giggles as they turn to walk away after you say you want “Thai spicy” and then stands there and watches you take the first couple of bites (sometimes bringing colleagues to watch).
At a Thai restaurant in the States - you know a dish is gonna be spicy when you see not one, not two, but several of those little red pepper symbols on the menu, which must be code for “only serve this to other Thai people” since the server’s reaction is the same as above when you order one.
And, finally, for Thai food at home with #chefinthemaking - you know a dish is gonna be spicy when your wife asks you to lick sauce off her finger to “tell me if it’s spicy enough” and then watches you as you try (unsuccessfully) to claim you’re coughing because, “something went down the wrong way.”
