Difficulty with lunges. Anyone else?

My balance and leg strength can be so good in other aspects but when it comes to lunges I am just a mess. I usually do them with no weights to avoid some impact issues on my knees, but I still feel like my ankles are so wobbly.

I find doing a step back lunge easier than a step forward lunge. I wonder what that says about a specific muscle area I might be lacking in strength? When i do a step forward lunge, I pretty much can’t get my front foot back to standing without kind of taking an extra “re-adjustment” step with my back foot. I see in videos that Kelli and Daniel never move their back foot at all when doing step forward lunge. Does anyone have this same issue?
