Creator Check-In: Brian What Consistency Has Taught Me

Hey FB Family!

Back in December, I earned my black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, and honestly, it’s still a little strange seeing the photo pop up on my phone every now and then. It was definitely one of those moments that meant a lot to me, but not really because of the belt itself. I think it meant more because of everything behind it that most people never really see.

When people think about a black belt, I think they usually picture years of hard training, discipline, intensity, and constantly pushing yourself. And while all of that is part of it, the reality is that most of the journey looked a lot less exciting than people probably imagine. A lot of it was just about staying consistent while balancing everyday life. Going to training after long workdays, squeezing sessions in between responsibilities, dealing with injuries, low energy days, stress, family stuff, and all the other things life throws into the mix.

Honestly, getting older has changed my mindset around a lot of this, too. Years ago, I probably thought everything had to feel intense all the time to count. Hard workouts, hard training, always pushing harder. And while I still enjoy challenging myself, I’ve definitely started appreciating balance a lot more than I used to.

These days, between filming workouts, work projects, family life, and trying to keep up with everything else, I’ve realized consistency matters way more than constantly going all out. Some days I train hard… some days it’s mobility work, stretching, or just getting some movement in wherever I can fit it. I’ve learned there’s value in all of it.

I also think consistency looks different for everyone, and honestly, even different depending on the season of life you’re in. Sometimes consistency means training hard multiple days a week. Other times it means getting in a short workout, going for a walk, stretching for ten minutes, or just doing enough to stay connected to the routine while life feels chaotic. I appreciate that a lot more now than I used to.

I’ve noticed the same thing with my Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese classes, too. I’ve been sticking with both for a while now, and little by little, I can actually feel things improving. Conversations flow better, I’m making fewer mistakes, and overall I just feel more comfortable speaking. None of that happened overnight, though. It came from showing up consistently, even on days where it felt like I knew nothing and I was back at day 1 again.

I think that’s probably one of the biggest things all of this has taught me lately. Most meaningful progress usually happens quietly over time while you’re just living your normal everyday life. It rarely feels the way we think it will feel while it’s happening. Whether it’s fitness, learning something new, relationships, family, health, or personal growth, a lot of it really just comes down to continuing to show up over and over again.

So that’s kind of where my head has been lately. Less focused on perfection and intensity all the time, and more focused on building routines and habits that actually fit into real life long term.

So Team, I’m curious, have you noticed your mindset shifting over the years, too? Maybe with fitness, hobbies, work, or life in general?
