Now if you’re anything like some of the folks I work with in a therapy setting, you might be like “well I can’t just make myself think positively.” And to that I simultaneously agree and disagree.
We can’t control everything that pops into our minds, particularly the first or most automatic things that pop into our minds. But I also want you to consider why you tend to think what you do. For most of us, our minds default to a particular way of thinking because it is what we have most practice with. If we’re looking to shift our mindset, we have to practice thinking in a different way.
There is all sorts of research to show the health benefits of positive thinking or optimism. We know that it helps us. I certainly don’t want you to ignore negative emotions or experiences as that will cause other issues; but I do want you to add in the positive, particularly if that is something that is hard for you. Practice with this over time will make it become more automatic.
So today’s practice will have a little mindfulness, a little imagery, and a little bit of practice searching for the positive. This is a perfect practice for anyone who might struggle to see the good side of things or for someone just looking to find a little joy. Let me know how it goes in the comments!
