For me, signs that I’m overtaxed mentally include zoning out during work, relying on distraction a bit too often, difficulties focusing, and struggles with motivation. While this can look different for everyone, we all need periods in our lives where we intentionally rest our minds. This is so critical to avoid burnout from the things that are important to us. Even if the things important to us are things we’re passionate about, no one can devote 100% of their time and mental energy onto one thing without getting burned out eventually.
I encourage you all to find and cultivate ways to invite mental rest into your daily life, but this practice is a fun way to practice even just for a few minutes. This will include mindfulness, body awareness, and a bit of daydreaming - all with the aim of wakeful rest. So give this one a try and let me know in the comments below what things help you to mentally rest?
