PPals Friday 9 January 2026 🥵🌇🌞🚒🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Hello folks, and welcome to Inferno Friday. It is currently 44* C with 75kph wind gusts, that's 111 F and 47mph for the Americans. Been watching the news, tracking where the bushfires, evacuation orders, and power outages are. I live in a big city, and staying at home with the AC is probably the safest place to be right now - there isn't enough bush for a giant out of control bushfire, but there are plenty of smaller local ones. A few years ago when I was doing PhD field work on birds a couple hours north of here, I asked my (highly problematic) supervisor what happens if the field site burns down? The plan at the time was to do a long term study and return to the same site studying the same individuals for multiple field seasons. He told me that area does not get bushfires. Well guess what's on fire right now.

In other news, Max has mysteriously hurt his paw very badly over night. Not sure how since he was in bed the whole time, but one toe and claw are having some problem. No blood but things are swollen and he's in a lot of pain. I gave him some anti-inflammatory medication I have on hand for his arthritis, so he's calmed down a fair bit and is eating and drinking. He's going to the vet early tomorrow morning. Wondering if it's time to overrule D and get an uber to the emergency vet. It's been an anxiety riddled day here.

It would be dangerous and stupid to exercise in this weather, so I won't. No cooking either, just having a cold fruit smoothie now and sipping on an electrolyte drink. Trying to avoid a repeat of yesterday with the salts. But most of the rest of you are currently freezing under 27 feet of snow. Burning the remaining furniture for warmth? Probably. Snowshoeing across the tundra and roasting squirrels for sustenance? A protein rich, free range, low carb choice. Come tell me about it.

P.S. sending support to CK
