I often ask people I work with in therapy about their inner dialogue, running narrative, etc. Different people have different inner experiences - some have a dialogue with themself, some with hypothetical other people, some don’t have anything at all, and some narrate their life like a story. I think this is so cool! One thing most folks who come to work with me (and probably those who don’t) have in common is that there is some domain of life where that inner dialogue/narrative is overtly negative. If for you that is how you think/talk about your body, then this practice is for you!
Today’s self-compassion for body image is designed to help you become more aware of this inner dialogue, and offer yourself and your body some compassion in this moment. We are never going to “hate” or “dislike” our way into change and, if we do, it often doesn’t last. To make long-term and sustainable changes, it has to come from a place of kindness, respect, and care for ourselves.
So I’d love to hear what your inner dialogue/narrative is like — a conversation or narrative (or something else?!) — in the comments below!
