Lateral Lunge Pain

I have a problem performing lateral lunges. Whenever I lunge, my knees start to hurt, regardless of the weight I use (today I tried it with 2x 13.5 kg). Even when using just my body weight, unfortunately, I quickly feel discomfort in this exercise. Recently, I've started skipping the sidestep of the lateral lunge and positioning my legs similar to a sumo squat, shifting the weight between my legs. Now I wonder if this undermines the actual purpose of the exercise and is considered 'cheating.' I assume my abductors are not being equally hit with this modification. Do you have any form suggestions and corrections for this exercise?
