Total Body Power Yoga: Student-Created Flow

This is the first time I have reached out and asked this wonderful community to help me create a Yoga class – and I am so glad that I did! After reading all of your comments, I took as many suggestions as I possibly could, and I strung together a flow that will challenge your balance, proprioception, and mobility. I had a TON of fun playing with transitions and connecting postures/sequences in ways that I have never thought of before, and this got me thinking . . .

Switching up the ways we move our bodies is not only vital for supporting physical longevity, but it’s important for our minds as well. Exposing ourselves to new ways of moving, even if the change is as subtle as switching the foot we normally step to the top of our mats with, can help us to stay intentional. I have talked about this before, but I find that with a hectic lifestyle it can be so easy to turn our exercise routine into another task to check off the to-do list; I know for myself, that when exercise becomes just another chore, I am no longer moving my body with intention, nor am I connected to myself in the present moment.

With the intention of creating a space that would allow all of us to slow down enough to come back to moving with intention, curiosity, and maybe even a sense of play, each posture taken in the main section of this practice will occupy about 3-5 breaths. I invite you to explore what it feels like in your body and mind to slow down.

What do you notice? Maybe you notice physical discomfort in holding a challenging posture or that you hold your breath when you are asked to move through a transition with control; maybe you notice your thoughts racing and feelings of frustration rise the slower we move. Perhaps you find that your experience is exactly the opposite of what I just described! Whatever it is that comes up for you – thoughts and feelings collectively – can you simply observe without judgment or the need to create a story around your thought/feeling(s)?

Movement is an opportunity for connection, and it doesn’t have to be so serious! I find that when I can show up on my mat (or in the gym/studio) and I can truly enjoy moving my body for the felt experience, I not only feel like the best version of myself, but I find that I can continue to carve out time for my body to move. Consistency becomes a shift in perspective from “I have to” to “I want to.”

Let your movement be empowering; creative; playful.
