Bored eating

Does anyone have advice for curbing the bad habit of bored eating?

I grew up often eating in front of the tv, and after my sister and I would be watching it for a while, my mom would come in and tell us we either had to turn the tv off or get something else to eat. Obviously being kids, we would choose the option that allowed us to keep watching tv. Now as an adult, I have the compulsion to eat whenever I’m in front of the tv, and I’ll often eat more food than necessary to justify continuing to watch tv. I realized it’s been getting worse too as this habit has been spreading to other areas of bored eating with increasing frequency, such as unnecessarily buying unhealthy snacks to kill time in between appointments in my schedule.

Telling myself simply to stop eating in front of the tv and to stop buying unhealthy snacks of course hasn’t been effective, and I ultimately need to develop more self-discipline, so has anyone else who has struggled with this problem found any effective solutions?
