Need some help with backbows, swimmers, etc

I'm having some trouble with backbows, swimmers and similar excercises and that is that sometimes (especially if I did an intense upper body workout the previous day it seems) I get an intense pain in my shoulder after or even during doing these, so I guess I'm doing something wrong. And if I'm lucky I may even get a headache too. Now, I have long dreadlocks which makes my head heavier than most so during core excercises I generally have to be extra careful to avoid neck injury, so maybe I'm somehow using my shoulders for that.

Also, I'm not exactly sure which muscles I'm supposed to be feeling with these back bows, so what I'm looking for is an explanation on how to properly do these in good form.
