strength training - total noob.

hi all, ive barely ever done any strength training before (my workouts are usually bodyweight/running/yoga/swimming). im on some medication that's caused me to gain weight over the last year or so, so the cardio doesn't seem to be cutting it anymore.

2 questions:

1 - is it safe to buy some basic dumbbells and start following an FB strength programme? do i need to go to a gym for a bit and getting specific instructions?

2 - any suggestions on strength training for legs at home? i keep thinking the only way to do this is machines at the gym - but i really don't like going to gyms and working out in public (bee in my bonnet!).

fyi i am 31 yrs old, with a tendency to gather weight around my belly.
