Proper Push-up form - a query

I did Daniel’s new push-up strength workout this afternoon and was rather surprised to hear him say that you should have your hands out wide and your elbows going straight out to the side (for a regular push -up). My understanding has always been that letting your elbows flare out is a common mistake, and that the correct form is to have them at around 45 degrees to your body, with your hands only just outside shoulder-width.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I know K& D aren’t infallible...(much as I hate to admit it)
