Daily Check-In: Super Duper Saturday, 10 October 2020

You guys, I do not have inspirational nature photos to share.

But I do have a dubious YouTube algorithm gremlin living in my laptop. Let's hear it for the National Aerobic Championship USA 1988!!! I shared something along these lines ages ago, but the gremlin has produced it again. Along with Jazzercise. So we have to deal with this. Jane Fonda, Billy Banks' Tae Bo, and Jack LaLanne also make an appearance in the photo montage. Wowee.

I don't know a lot about the history of the fitness industry. I think it came into existence sometime during the first half of the 20th century as a way to counteract new, sedentary office jobs, and I think it also had something to do with keeping housewives slim. And individual fitness fads and what's en vogue changes with the weather. Anyone remember Suzanne Somers with her Thigh Master, or Chuck Norris and his Total Gym? Or go pick up a copy of Buns of Steel?? How about that little trampoline from your grandmother's basement, or flyers for bootcamp in the park? I kind of wanted a pair of those "shoes" by Vibram that had individual toe pockets and were supposed to fix all our running-related pains, but I have really short toes and no way would they fit. But I guess I wan't missing much, because they later ended up in a huge settlement over false health claims.

So my Super Duper Saturday question(s) to you all is: are there any retro fitness trends you (perhaps secretly) miss? It's ok if you still wear leg warmers, we're a friendly and open minded bunch! Any you're thoroughly happy to say good riddance to? And how do you filter out the legitimate from the gimmicky? What's popular now that we will look back in 20 years and cringe?

For me? I wouldn't mind if roller blading came back. Although I think it did a little bit with the younger crowd - or at least I would occasionally see uni students roller blading around campus back in the pre-covid old days when we were still allowed to go there. And watching those old videos, I can't believe anyone wore those leotards. They're so...sleek. Prancing around on the stage, they look like worms. And those high cut bottoms on the ladies!! Although I guess those have come back?? How is that ok?! As for filtering, I live in a cave: I don't use any social media except this, and we don't really get much in the way of gimmicky nonsense otherwise in Australia. So it's pretty easy for me to not pay attention to these sorts of fads, because I don't usually know they're even happening. (And then when I go back to the US I'm blindsided by all the gadgets and diets and products and things that you definitely need to have any sort of fitness at all, but I didn't know existed. Like, even in the airport. Although admittedly, there is an upside to this in that it is a whole lot easier for me to get gluten free food in the US than here. No one cares about gluten here except coeliacs, so of course there are many fewer gluten free products or options when eating out.)

And anyway, speaking of diets and gadgets and fitness, I'd better get to the point!! What's on the menu today?? Food and exercise wise?? It's ok if the exercise menu is blank and you're having a rest, but I hope you all have something to eat. Have you got exciting, relaxing, or stressful weekend plans? Or no plans at all? And really, how are you? What's going on in your life? Read or watched anything good lately? Heard any good jokes? How are you feeling? Tell me! Let's talk guys!
