Balancing cardio vs strength training?

Hi everyone! I hope you are doing well. I have a question:

I just bought a used rower machine and am excited to use it. I regularly strength train but can never do the high impact for HIIT because it hurts my knees too much. I am excited to use the rower to boost my cardio.

Does anyone else have/use a rowing machine? How many days per week do you row vs. strength train (or other exercise)?

Also, I find lunges often result in knee pain from knee instability. Are step ups a suitable alternative to lunges? Any other lunge substitute recommendations?
