Deadlift toe position - safe?

So I have been trying to look at proper form for exercises because of some lower back/hip aches. I was researching deadlifts and trying to find the rationale for toes in/out/straight but I could only find articles talking about doing a proper deadlift with toes forward or out. I know the videos on here have talked about engaging the hamstrings differently, but are they all safe? I even notice that for a certain foot position, the back of my knee , basically where the hamstring connects, tends to snap a bit more so than with other toe positions.

Anyways, just wondering if there is any info lurking in theaw forums 🙏
