Guilt with listening to your body..

I don't have the best relationship with my body and to add to that i am competitive, i have every-now and then vitamin D deficiency which if i didn't stick to my supplements can cause inflimation and extra soreness .. now I am doing "Strong" and I am taking extra breaks because of that .. how did you guys control being hard on your self when you have to take a step back and tone down the excercises??
