One dumbbell vs two- Lower Body Strength Question

Recently I’ve begun to use just one dumbbell instead of two during lower body strength training for a few exercises, & others, increasing weight with a traditional 3 set routine. Particularly for side lunges, squats. With 2 dumbbells I’d normally lift with 80 lbs total for squats & about 55 lbs total for side lunges. Using 1 dumbbell, I’ve quickly discovered I can’t use the same weight; in fact I’ve had to drop weight almost half. For instance, 1 dumbbell side lunge holding 25 lb gets everything amped up & after 20 reps total alternating each side, I need at least a few minutes to regroup before the next set. Same with the squats.

What’s up? Only thing I can figure is my range of motion for any of these exercises is much more deep, fluid. And oh man, the DOMS afterwards has been super intense. I’ve been waddling around last 2 days😁.

Curious if anyone else out there has any info, experience, etc. Thanks FB!
