Confused about losing fat while gaining muscle

Hi Blenders! I'm confused about the process of losing fat while also trying to build muscle. I have had great success losing pounds and inches since starting FB in April. I have completed several programs including Strong and Mass. Now I'm within a few pounds of my goal weight and ready for some "fine turning." I would like to be leaner and (hopefully) showcase my hard earned muscles! If I scale back calories to burn fat, do I compromise muscle? It seems like there is a back and forth that has to happen between muscle gain and fat loss. Is there an ideal length of time to focus on each? I hope this makes sense. I'm having a hard time articulating it.
