Holding weight differences

Happy weekend and New Year everyone.

I was wondering if anyone knows what differences / benefits in holding weights by shoulders or at your sides during Lower body workouts?

When keli and daniel workout together I notice sometimes keli will hold weights and shoulders and daniel at the sides during lunges / squats ect. I prefer to hold by shoulders but after working out for over a year I think its time I finally find out if it changes anything...I did do a google search but found no answers.
