Opinions on traditional workouts

I am 47 and fairly fit(as far as capabilities), but I have issues with my back and I’ve been having to be more careful with my movements, lest I end up in bed with an ice pack and not being able to work out at all.

I’m wondering how necessary HIIT is to fitness, and if I can get the same results with the way I used to do it at the gym, half hour strength, half hour cardio-bike, treadmill, elliptical. I know I can adapt the movements in a HIIT to make them less explosive and low impact, but my brain in the moment won’t let me because it doesn’t feel hard enough. How many here don’t do regular HIIT and are okay with it?
