Side plank with dips

Hi, I hope everyone is having a great weekend :)

Just wondering if anyone else experiences the same thing with the above exercise. I'm pretty sure my form is good but I dont ever feel any contracting in my core or obliques but the side of my thigh / glutes...so say I'm on the right side I feel like im working out my right thigh / glute and viser versa. Its really annoying me as I've been doing this exercise for a year and it just doesn't seem to do anything for my obliques or core. I find side crunches better or planks with hip dips so now I usually modify my workouts with this instead. Anyone else feel the same or have a really been doing the exercise wrong for a whole year?
