More results with less time?

My question is around duration and intensity. For those of you that have trained intensively, have you ever cut back? What happened when you took an extra rest day, cut back on duration, cut back on intensity, etc. Meaning, have you experienced better results or worse results when you backed off your training? What happened when you went from hour long to half hour long workouts? What happened when you did or did not take rest days? I'm going to try and back down myself as an experiment (going from an hour long to around a half hour, but keeping the intensity). Can I get more for less time?! Looking forward to hearing (reading) your experiences!
