HIIT vs Superset lifting

Can y'all help me understand the benefits of HIIT vs the cardio you get from super-set lifting? Are there different muscles you get (fast twitch or something!?!?) that are beneficial that you can't get from SS lifting and that's why you need HIIT? I'm certainly not opposed to HIIT (I "like" it at times) but I want to really build strength and I tend to push a bit too hard and I want to avoid injury as I get older (impact wise). When I was doing a lower body intensive session (thanks Kelli and Daniel!) I was huffing and puffing like HIIT. It made me wonder...well do I even need HIIT if I can get this from strength training? It's making me think the strong program may be the "only" type of training I need (I say "only" b/c y'all know it has everything in it...including a little HIIT).
