Avoiding calorie deficit

Hey guys,

I am trying to build muscle mass without losing weight - if anything I could probably afford to gain about 10lb, although I figure building muscle alone should accomplish that. I am at a healthy BMI and, prior to exercising, had no difficulty maintaining my weight simply by eating when hungry.

I imagine if I kept eating the same amount I did before exercising, I would create a calorie deficit, which I want to avoid. So my question is -- simply by introducing exercise, will I become hungry more often, and I can continue my approach of simply eating when hungry, following my body's natural cues? Or should I to some extent make a conscious effort to eat a bit more now, to ensure I avoid a calorie deficit?

I really want to avoid counting calories or anything that takes up a lot of my headspace, but if there are some general principles I can follow to ensure my food intake is where it should be, that would be great!

Thanks for any insights you may be able to share :)
