We had no plans for this morning, but then we got an email asking for help.... there had been a fire in one of the heathland areas across town. The fire brigade took all night to put it out and dampening it. Then this morning the ranger from that area was given the all clear for a search of the area: looking for wildlife, recording dead specimens and possibly rescuing those still alive. The area was also litterpicked as it obviously uncovered a lot of rubbish (I found some weird looking gel like substance.... the remains of a nappy/diaper!!! It was disgusting and had to be taken away separately!).

The start of the fire: as the bottom right pic shows, a disposable bbq. Yes, of course very dry heathland is an ideal spot for having a bbq 😡😡😡😡😡how stupid can you get?!?!

The rangers thought most of the wildlife had managed to cross over to the bit that was not on fire, as we found no charred remains of any wildlife. Or they had managed to escape in their burrows, as the fire did not go too deep into the soil. Bees were flying around and ants were about, but that was the only thing we found. The rubbish... too much to be described😱😡!

So sad, so devastating.... so stupid, so angry!!!
