#FB Potluck: 🇬🇧 Toad in the hole and Eton Mess

So, I decided not to choose between the UK (where I’ve lived for nearly 10 years) and Australia (where I grew up) and instead do both!

Here is offering number 1 with an English theme.

First up I made my first ever ‘toad in the hole’. Now, in Australia (and the US I think) toad in the hole is a piece of bread with a hole in the centre, fried with an egg in the hole. In the UK, it’s pork sausages topped with batter that swells into a massive Yorkshire pudding - ok, I think you just need to look at the recipe to get an idea. It’s ultimate stodgy pub type food, perfect for all those cold and rainy days although perhaps not an every day choice. I also made onion gravy to go on top and served with carrots and asparagus.

I decided to have mine with kombucha which is perhaps not the normal toad in the hole drink (beer or cider might be more appropriate) but this one is made in the UK and is my current favourite drink.

Next, for dessert, I whipped up an Eton mess. Possibly the easiest dessert ever made (I used store bought meringue). It’s a mix of whipped cream, blended strawberry sauce, fresh strawberries and crushed meringue. It’s believed to have been created in Eton College, a posh boarding school. My husband tells me there’s a rumour that it was created when someone dropped a pavlova and decided to serve it anyway after it had broken up.
