Leg muscles are too weak for my joints

Hi everyone!

i'm 20 y/o and my doctor found out that my muscles are too weak for my knees which results in excruciating pain after a whole day of walking/working (starting from 6500 steps). I barely can go up the stairs and i also can barely walk because of the pain.

Does anyone have or had the same problems? If so, what do/did you guys do to less the pain, to make your muscles stronger (which exercises are best and which exercises are best to avoid?)
