What to eat to avoid altitude sickness

I'm traveling to Peru in April from New England. I've read that eating carbs and staying hydrated is key to avoiding altitude sickness. I'm wondering if anyone has any good ideas for healthy clean travel snacks that are high in carbs and easy to pack in my carry-on. I don't want to drink sports drinks because they're so high in sugar but then again they have a high amount of electrolytes. Any ideas on getting electrolytes while avoiding sports drinks? Thanks!
